Abstract

Folic acid as substance obtained by chemical synthesis and has no own metabolic activity. Metafolin® is a synthetic compound derived from 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate. Benefits of Metafolin include direct intake of biologically active substances; optimal form and effect of the drug even in case of homozygous and/or heterozygous genotypes 677C→T polymorphism of MTHFR. Considering high prevalence of MTHFR genetic polymorphism and its reduced activity, metafolin-contained vitamin-mineral supplements are preferred as Metafolin is the active form of folic acid which presents high bioavailability.
